Your Investment Makes A Difference In The Life Of A Youth

Summer is beginning and June brings with it the end of Jobs For Youth’s fiscal year (June 30, 2008). Please take a moment to show your support by making a contribution to Jobs For Youth. We invite you to accept this invitation as a means of investing in the future of our youth.

There are over 100,000 young adults between the ages of 16 through 24 years of age who are not working or in school in the Greater Chicago Area—68,576 in the city of Chicago. (Source: 2006 American Community Survey, U.S. Census Bureau, Tabulations by Center for Labor Market Studies.) This number will continue to grow, creating growing social and economic problems among our youth, especially those with limited schooling and those who reside in low-income neighborhoods. The plight of this invisible population and its impact on the quality of life in our cities is arguably the most consequential of all current issues. Poverty, dependency and crime rates are only the tip of the iceberg. You may have watched a recent news program on television or read that the increase of violence upon our youth has reached the agenda of the national media. Reports are written daily on the two causes of violence in our youth—unemployment and poverty. We all know the key to eradicating poverty is decent and productive employment, and, in this context, Jobs For Youth focuses especially on the needs and aspirations of young people. They are taught work related skills, how to write a resume, how to perform well in an interview, and the proper procedure when a job is secured. Since 1979, Jobs For Youth has made over 25,000 job placements for Chicago's low-income youth ages 17 through 24 and since we instituted our GED program 950 youth have earned their GED Certificates.

Thanks in part to the generous support of friends like you, Jobs For Youth made many important advances this past year, just to name a few:

  • we moved into a larger facility
  • we impacted the lives of 1,000 youth (50 earned a GED, 600 earned a Work Readiness Certificate and 350 received follow-up job placement
  • we have placed 73 youth ex-offenders on work sites
  • we will place approx. 830 youths in jobs and make 1,200 job placements at an average wage of $9.30/hr. by June 30, 2008
  • we will work with more than 600 Chicago area employers to meet their hiring needs
  • we offer three workshops, Work Readiness/Life Skills Workshops, Intermediate Office Skills and Customer Service Skills Training.

To assist us in expanding and enhancing our programs, we are seeking various levels of contributions; of course any support would be greatly appreciated. No matter how big or small your gift, your generosity will help make an impact at Jobs For Youth now and for the future. The legacy of our youth is in your hands! We can’t continue without you.
